About the person Karl (also Carl) Culmann (1821-1881, civil and structural engineer, Germany/Switzerland) is considered the founder of graphical statics. He first worked at the Bavarian Railway Office and from 1855 at the School of Engineering at ETH Zurich, which he co-founded. He was its principal from 1872 to 1875. In a private description of a study trip to England and North America in 1850/1851, Culmann argued in favour of slavery, which he saw as essential to the prosperity of immigrant whites.
