About the person Carl Schröter (1855-1939, botanist, Germany/Switzerland) was a researcher specialising in plant sociology and geobotany, of which he is regarded as one of the founders. On his travels he not only collected new knowledge, but also herbaria and various colonial goods. Schröter helped to found the Swiss Botanical Society, thus becoming part of a colonial network. This society was also involved in non-European endeavours, such as the establishment of colonial agriculture in Java. After habilitating at the Swiss Federal Polytechnic (now ETH Zurich) in 1878, Carl Schröter (1855-1939) was appointed full professor of special botany in 1882 at the age of 28.
