Female Figure, c. 1985

Hans Josephsohn (1920–2012)

About the artwork

The human figure is invariably the subject of internationally renowned sculptor Hans Josephsohn’s work – whether reclining, seated or, as in this case, standing. The woman appears to be freeing herself from an enclosed block – or perhaps vanishing back into it. Solid as her body may seem, she hovers between emergence and disappearance. Hans Josephsohn always created plaster models of his works before casting them in bronze.
